At Recovery Connections, we’ve always believed in the power of lived experience. From supporting people in their recovery journeys to sharing what works with others, we’ve spent years showing how peer-led support can make a real difference.

Now, we’re taking that commitment even further. Together with the University of Birmingham, we’re helping to lead a major three-year study funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). This project will look at the role and impact of Lived Experience Recovery Organisations (LEROs) in England’s drug and alcohol recovery system—and we’re proud to be at the heart of it.

LEROs, like ours, play a big part in helping people build lasting recovery. But, from a research standpoint, there’s still a lot to learn about how they work, how they’re funded, and how to show the difference they make. This research will help answer those questions by mapping LEROs across the country, carrying out detailed case studies, and creating a national framework to measure recovery outcomes.

Our involvement, including In-depth case studies, and a Lived Experience Advisory Panel, means lived experience will guide every stage of this work. We hope it will lead to stronger recovery systems and enhance the spotlight on the value of peer-led support—something we’ve always advocated for.
