Introduction
Looking after and supporting employees has never been as important as it is today. Good employers are looking to support staff through difficult and challenging times in their life – and they are also mindful of retaining good workers.
PD Ports Introduction
To this end, we have recently developed a partnership with PD Ports to support them in meeting the needs of their employees, relating to addiction and addiction recovery across the UK.
PD Ports are the owner and operator of Teesport and one of the largest port groups in the UK and operate in 13 locations nationwide.
They are one of the largest private employers in the Tees Valley. They support thousands of jobs locally and they also have one of the largest workforces in the North- East.
Developing the Relationship
Underpinning the work of PD Ports is health and safety. They believe that it’s ‘at the heart of their work and their number one priority’. Our partnership with PD Ports grew from an ambition from within PD Ports to extend their staff welfare offer, as they recognised the potential safety and welfare impact of substance misuse issues within the workforce.
The ethos of PD Ports is to ‘build on creating trusted, long-lasting partnerships that allow them to understand customers and their unique requirements’. This has also been our approach when working with PD Ports throughout this year. We have worked closely with them to ensure that, together, we build a recovery response that is appropriate to their needs – and to the needs of their employees.
PD Ports are taking a pro-active approach to supporting their workforce in relation to addiction and recovery through our partnership.
The interventions
So, as a partnership what are we doing? Fundamentally, Recovery Connections is providing an Intervention and Prevention model at three key levels:
- Providing one to one support for individuals through private consultation, linking in with existing PD Ports HR policies and procedures. This support also includes essential linkage to existing support provision in Middlesbrough.
- We are providing training and group work for the workforce at all levels – including at Director level, management level, operatives, workers and with Union representatives. This will be through the delivery of bespoke substance misuse and recovery awareness training.
- Focusing on the development of a supportive network of Peer Recovery Champions using the Recovery Ambassador and Recovery Ally approach.
We are proud and privileged to be in a position to support a world leading employer within Middlesbrough and across the UK – and we are sure the benefits will be evidenced as our work progresses.
We are also keen to speak to any other employers who feel that additional recovery and addiction support would benefit their workforce, their families and their business.
