Community Recovery Support

Led by the people we support, your personal recovery journey is the most important aspect of our work. Many of our staff began their own journey by getting in touch, attending one of our buildings, and discovering their own pathway to recovery.

This is why we provide a wide range of recovery support opportunities, empowering you to create your own pathway to recovery from addiction. Led by our Mission, Vision and Values, through a culture of recovery we coach, nurture, train, educate, inspire and empower individuals and to achieve their full potential.

Everybody who comes to us will have a professional, qualified recovery coach with lived experience of recovery from addiction. You will be able to join meetings, groups, events, and even get involved with our Free Hot Coffee Bikes.

If you don’t want to be part of groups straight away though, no problem. Your coach will be on hand to provide support, signpost you to any other services that may be of help, and provide the experience you need, to see that recovery is possible, for everyone.

We value and respect all diversity and cultures, and are committed to providing an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive. In each are of the charity, you will find gender-specific groups and the ability to speak openly, and confidentially, about your experience, in a safe, recovery friendly environment.

Lived Experience in your area

But, when you do feel comfortable becoming more involved in the community, you’ll find plenty of groups, events and activities to get involved in. And, as part of the community, you’ll help us to shape the future of our charity for others seeking recovery from addiction. Check out our community timetables to find out what’s happening in your area, and how to access support local to you:

Rehab

Since 2016, we have helped people into recovery through our dayab and residential rehab programmes. Many of our current staff first worked with Recovery Connections as rehab residents, starting their recovery journey within the safe walls of our facilities.

Here, people have the opportunity to learn about both addiction and recovery, and develop the skills and techniques to build recovery capital and live without alcohol or substances. Supported for up to 26 weeks, this crucial period of early recovery is where your own journey can truly begin.

Our primary residential rehab facilities are in Middlesbrough and the South Tees area. But, in both Gateshead and Darlington, we also offer a dayhab model, where people come to attend a series of rehab groups and services throughout the week.

And, we always celebrate the occasion when someone has worked through their rehab programme and reached a landmark recovery date.

Volunteers & Ambassadors

Recovery Connections is blessed to receive thousands of hours of volunteer support, each year. Community members, and rehab graduates, often begin volunteering for us as soon as they are able to do so. Currently, we have staff at all levels of the charity, including our senior leadership team, who began their journey as a volunteer.

Become an Ambassador of Recovery

Within each service area, we have a volunteer coordinator on hand to guide you through the process of registering as a volunteer, and getting involved in events and activities that provide meaningful experiences.

And, everyone who joins us will have the opportunity to complete our innovative Ambassador Programme. This 13 week course equips every graduate with the knowledge and skills required to work at an organisation like Recovery Connections, or in similar healthcare roles.

What you receive...

Ambassador graduates will also receive a Level 2 Certificate in Peer Mentoring, and get to be part of a graduation ceremony, held in either Middlesbrough or Gateshead. The training is available to all charity communities, with sessions taking place close to our working locations in both the north and south of the region.

Trauma Therapy

In Middlesbrough and Gateshead, we provide a Trauma Therapy service for anyone affected by drugs or alcohol. Qualified counsellors host open-ended sessions with people looking to explore and understand the impact of past or recent trauma. Sessions take place in a quiet, confidential environment, where you lead the conversation and learn to cope with difficult thoughts, feelings, and memories. All of our counsellors are fully accredited and registered with a nationally recognised awarding body.

IPS Employment

Recovery Connections runs the North East’s largest Individual Placement Support network. With Employment Specialists on hand in Middlesbrough, Redcar, Darlington, Stockton, Hartlepool and Sunderland, since 2021 we have supported around 350 people into work, as part of their recovery journey. If getting into work or returning to work is one of your recovery goals, then you are welcome to get in touch with our IPS teams across the region.
